Necromancy, unlike popular media makes it out to be, is not about making dead bodies move again. It is, rather, the ability to communicate with spirits, control energies that have to do with death and decay, and the quite interesting field of soul manipulation. These abilities can be either helpful or harmful, depending on how they are used, so the popular idea of "Necromancy is evil" or "Necromancy is black magic" is not quite correct.
Using what is often called "death essence," a practitioner of necromancy can both harm and heal. Channeling such energy through you tends to have negative effects over time however, which leads to a few problems down the road. However, if used, it can kill dying/cancerous areas in the various energy-bodies and systems. This practice can lead to healing due to less resources being put into hopeless causes trying to heal something that needs to be replaced instead, or giving energy to parasitic entities or cancerous areas of the energy-body.
Personally, I have not had much experience speaking with spirits, so I cannot say much about that side of necromancy.
Some uses of necromancy can alter the soul of the target. This can be used either for good or for ill, though it can do quite a bit of good if you pull it off right. Properly made additions or enhancements to the soul can greatly increase many things, such as the amount of energy you generate, the quality of energy you generate, how you feel towards events, how efficiently you use energy and willpower, how well your systems work, and many more similar things.
