If you have ever summoned anything at random before, you probably know first hand what can happen when you summon something that disagrees with you, or simply hates you. It is not exactly fun to summon something and be instantly attacked, as I am sure some of you know first hand.
There is a technique you can use to summon just about anything safely however. If you have total control over your mentality, it is possible to let go of your personality and become what you want to summon - for example, if you wanted to summon an entity that causes greed, and do not wish for it to latch onto you rather than who you want it to go visit, you can forget who you are, think of nothing except raw greed, and allow yourself to become greed. This will allow you to be around said entities without any hostile interactions, as they see you as "pure" by their standards.
As with all things however, there are risks, so be cautious if you try this.

Or one could (and if in doubt of their ability to control the situation, should) cast a circle. This is probably the best form of protection when dealing with summonings.

In the past, I have seen some of the stronger entities I have met breaking those with ease. I tend to trust what works most often against stronger beings than what most people do, but when starting, it is best to have as much protection as possible. I would advise using as many protective measures as possible if summoning, as it can end up VERY bad if anything goes too terribly wrong.

I strongly disagree with becoming the essence of the entity that you summons. I have never found an entity which is solely consummed with only one particular aspect such as your example of greed. By doing what you suggest, you are calling for them to take over your essence and leaving the results to their will and not yours. I don't find possession a safe alternative to knowing who you're dealing with, how to invoke them, how to ask them and how to protect yourself, for even the experiance practitioner little lone for the dabbler. ~MappaM~

If you look specifically for something that is completely one-sided in its existence, it typically isn't too hard to find several of them. This can lead to something that you can temporarily match to make yourself a non-target to it.
If you appear to them to be a more advanced form of themselves, they will not attack you, and instead ask for your advice. They also will not try to possess you from all the results that I have seen.
To be honest though, I don't like summoning that much myself. I used to mess around with it, which wasn't the brightest of ideas. Now though, I only summon entities that I work with on a regular basis, and only those which have given me permission to do so. Its a much smarter way of doing things, but not many people are willing to do it that way. :\
